Some quotations :-

"I do not believe that this nation, which has maintained and defended its independence for a thousand years, will now submit to see it merged or lost. Nor did I become a member of our sovereign parliament in order to consent to that sovereignty being abated or transferred.Enoch Powell, MP, Conservative party conference, 1970 when membership negotiations were in progress.

"Government, Whitehall and the whole of Fleet Street are still trying to brainwash the British people, of all people, into believing that we are quite unfitted to exercise the [same] basic right of self-determination.
Tony Benn, MP, Cabinet Minister at the Labour party conference, 1975, on the referendum as to whether we should stay in the Common Market.

“If Gordon Brown wishes to call on politicians of other parties to advise on issues facing the country, he should tackle probably the most important one of all by inviting Nigel Farage MEP, the leader of the UK Independence Party, to instigate a cost-benefit analysis of our membership of the EU. This badly needed exercise has for years been shunned by both Conservative and Labour governments.”  Sir George Earle in the Daily Telegraph on 21st September 2007

"Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations – entangling alliances with none."   Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), 3rd President of the United States of America.

"The European Union Treaty… within a few years will lead to the creation of what the founding fathers of modern Europe dreamed of after the war, the United States of Europe." Helmut Kohl, German Chancellor, 1992

"The single currency is the greatest abandonment of sovereignty since the foundation of the European Community... It is a decision of an essentially political character."   Felipe Gonzalez, Spanish Prime Minister May 1998.

"It's a combination of a tidying-up exercise ... and reform......Those who are starting off on a campaign for a referendum might as well put away their placards and stop wasting their money because we are not going to do it."     Peter Hain, Labour Minister for Europe and negotiator on the Constitutional Convention, in an interview with Jeremy Vine on the BBC's Politics Show, 18 May 2003.

Parliament.....should debate the European constitutional question in detail and decide upon it.....then let the people have the final say." Tony Blair, former Labour Prime Minister, in a statement to the House of Commons, 20th April 2004.

"....Let the issue be put. Let the battle be joined." The end of the previous statement (ibid.).

"The most puzzling development in politics during the last decade is the apparent determination of Western European leaders to re-create the Soviet Union in Western Europe."    Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Head of State of the USSR, 1985-1991.

"The Europe of Maastricht could only have been created in the absence of democracy."    Claude Cheysson, French Foreign Secretary 1981-1984, speaking in 1996.

"There is no danger of a single currency."    Ted Heath, British Conservative Prime Minister in an EEC membership information leaflet, 1975.

Peter Sissons (to Ted Heath) : "...the single currency, the United States of Europe: was that on your mind when you took Britain in?"

Heath : "Of course, yes."   To Peter Sissons, BBC journalist and presenter of 'Question Time', BBC1, 1st November 1991 (see also below)

"We'll negotiate withdrawal from the EEC which has drained our natural resources and destroyed jobs."  Tony Blair again, in personal election manifestos for Beaconsfield (1982)and Sedgefield (1983).

Some references :-

In 1970, when Edward Heath, the Conservative Prime minister was negotiating our entry into the Common Market, he was secretly planning with other national leaders to merge the economies and currencies, without the knowledge of the full cabinet. In a document classified as "Confidential", entitled "Cabinet Official Committee on the approach to Europe, Sub-Committee on Financial and Monetary Aspects, Economic and Monetary Union" reference AEO(F)(70)5, dated 9th November 1970, which was prepared by two senior Treasury officials, this passage stands out :-

"It should be noted at the outset that the plan for economic and monetary union (EMU) has revolutionary long-term implications, both economic and political. It could imply the ultimate creation of a European federal state with a single currency. All the basic instruments of national economic life would ultimately be handed over to the central, federal authorities."

From "This Sceptic Isle", BBC4 documentary, presented by Peter Hitchens.

After the collapse of Edward Heath's government in June 1974, and public annoyance at the miners strike and the resulting "3-day week", a general election saw Harold Wilson move into 10 Downing Street with a Labour government. As much to quell public disquiet about our Common Market entry as splits in his own party (particularly the Left), he arranged a referendum on continued membership of the Common Market in 1975. However, the campaign was very one-sided, even morally corrupt. The "Yes" campaign (to stay in the Common Market) was funded by :-

1.) The Common Market itself, using funds from member nations (i.e. taxpayers - for current taxpayer-funded EU propaganda, see also http://www.eutruth.org.uk/cp.pdf )
2.) The British government, using yet more taxpayers money (which was illegal!)
3.) Big business and privately wealthy donors.

The "Yes" campaign's official headquarters was the Dorchester hotel, and according to Alistair McAlpine (of the construction family), later a Conservative Party treasurer: "We had to have somewhere private to meet. My family owned the Dorchester so I had some sway with the management." These 'planning breakfasts' were attended by pro-European MP's including Douglas Hurd (Conservative) Bill Rodgers and Roy Jenkins (Labour, SDP co-founders).

However, more sinister plottings were taking place in another top London hotel in what became known as "The Connaught Breakfasts". These included media bosses, broadcasting chiefs and representatives from MI6 (the Secret Intelligence Service)! This ensured a harmonious but extremely biased pro-European message was distributed to the people in all forms of print, radio and television media. The single lone voice against continued membership was represented by the Communist 'Morning Star' newspaper.
